Which Vitamin Deficiency Causes Hair Loss? A Guide for Pakistan

Iron deficiency is the nutrient problem most clearly linked to hair loss, and low vitamin D is the one most often found in people who are shedding. So when people ask which vitamin deficiency causes hair loss, the honest answer is mostly iron, which is a mineral, with vitamin D and zinc as possible contributors. Vitamin B12 and biotin are rarely the cause. The deciding factor is whether you are actually deficient, and only a blood test shows that. Guessing with supplements can even make things worse, because too much of some vitamins causes hair loss.

Which vitamin deficiency causes hair loss? The evidence ranked

NutrientLink to hair lossStrength of evidenceHow it is checked
IronCommon in women with hair loss; hair loss is a listed symptom of iron deficiency anaemiaModerateSerum ferritin plus a blood count
Vitamin DLow levels repeatedly found in alopecia areata; mixed results for diffuse sheddingModerate for alopecia areata, weak otherwiseBlood vitamin D level
ZincLower levels reported in some shedding studies, but results are inconsistentWeakSerum zinc, only when suspected
ProteinToo little protein can cause noticeable hair lossModerateDiet history
Vitamin B12 and folateVery few studies on hairWeakSerum B12 and folate
BiotinDeficiency is rare in people eating a normal dietVery weakRarely tested
Vitamin A and seleniumToo much, not too little, causes hair lossClear for excessSupplement history

The pattern is clear once the rows sit side by side. Minerals and protein matter more than the popular hair vitamins, and the table’s last row is a warning about self-treatment. A 2019 review of vitamins and minerals in hair loss reached the same overall conclusion: test first, and supplement only a proven deficiency.

If you want a plan built around your own results, nutritional counselling in Lahore starts from your blood reports and diet rather than a product.

How a deficiency turns into hair fall

Most deficiency-related hair loss is telogen effluvium. A body under strain pushes more hairs than usual into the resting phase, and they fall out together. The shedding usually starts 3 to 4 months after the trigger, which is why people rarely connect it with the diet change, illness or blood loss that started it.

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Deficiency shedding is more than that, spread across the whole scalp rather than at the temples or crown. Once a stressful trigger ends, the American Academy of Dermatology says most people regain normal fullness within 6 to 9 months.

A deficiency does not cause pattern baldness, but it can sit on top of it. Many Pakistani women have both at once, as our guide to female pattern hair loss in Pakistani women explains. Correcting the deficiency stops the extra shedding. It does not reverse the inherited thinning underneath.

Vitamin D deficiency hair loss: what Lahore data shows

Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common here. A Lahore study of healthy women of child-bearing age found that 73% of 215 participants were deficient. Women who got less than 30 minutes of sun a day, and those tested between January and March, were more likely to be low.

A 2024 Pakistani study of 120 patients with diffuse hair fall found vitamin D deficiency in 79% of them. That sounds like proof, but it is not. When most healthy women in a city are already low, finding low vitamin D in people with hair fall shows how common the deficiency is. It does not show that it caused the shedding.

The practical advice follows from that. Test vitamin D, correct it if it is low, and keep looking for a second cause if the hair fall continues.

Iron deficiency hair loss and anaemia in Pakistani women

Iron is the best-established link. The NHS lists hair loss as a symptom of iron deficiency anaemia, and a review of hair loss research found iron deficiency common in women with shedding.

In Pakistan’s 2018 National Nutrition Survey, 18.4% of women of reproductive age had iron deficiency anaemia, defined by both low haemoglobin and low ferritin. Iron deficiency can also exist without anaemia. A blood count alone can therefore look normal while ferritin, the measure of stored iron, is already low.

Ask for ferritin by name. There is no single agreed cut-off for hair loss, so your doctor reads the number alongside your symptoms, periods, diet and any recent pregnancy.

Vitamin B12, folate and biotin: what the evidence really says

B vitamin deficiencies are common in Pakistan. The 2018 national survey found folate deficiency in 44.7% of women of reproductive age and vitamin B12 deficiency in 20.2%. These deficiencies deserve treatment because they cause tiredness, mouth soreness and nerve symptoms.

The hair link is weaker than many people believe. Few studies have examined B12 or folate in hair loss, and the NHS symptom list for B12 deficiency does not include hair loss. In Roman Urdu searches, people ask “hair fall kis vitamin ki kami se hota hai” and usually land on biotin advice. Biotin deficiency, though, almost never occurs in people who eat a normal diet. There is also no good evidence that biotin for hair loss works in people who are not deficient.

Which blood tests to ask for in Lahore

A focused set of tests answers most questions. Ask your doctor whether you need:

  1. A complete blood count, to check for anaemia
  2. Serum ferritin, to measure stored iron
  3. 25-hydroxy vitamin D
  4. Vitamin B12 and folate, if your diet or symptoms point that way
  5. Thyroid function, because a thyroid problem can thin hair and treating it can reverse the loss

Zinc is not a routine screening test, although a Karachi study did find lower zinc in patients with long-standing shedding. Your doctor adds it only when your history suggests it. If you take biotin, tell the doctor and the laboratory, because it can distort thyroid results enough to mimic an overactive thyroid.

Four beliefs about vitamins and hair fall that need correcting

Supplement use is widespread. A 2025 Lahore survey of 605 people found that 58.2% used multivitamins, and self-medication was common.

  • Belief: a multivitamin cannot hurt. Fact: large amounts of vitamin A or selenium are toxic and can cause hair loss.
  • Belief: vitamin D is safe to take for years without checking. Fact: a 2026 study of vitamin D use in Lahore found doctors often prescribing without tests and patients using it long term with almost no follow-up testing.
  • Belief: iron tablets stop the shedding within weeks. Fact: evidence that iron replacement changes the outcome of shedding is still limited, so treatment follows your ferritin result, not hair fall alone.
  • Belief: hair fall always means a deficiency. Fact: hereditary hair loss is the most common cause of hair loss worldwide.

When hair fall is not a deficiency

If your blood results are normal, or the shedding continues after a deficiency is corrected, the cause is usually elsewhere. Stress, illness and recent weight loss are common triggers, as covered in our article on hair loss due to stress.

Pattern hair loss needs its own treatment. That can include hair growth medications in Lahore and PRP hair treatment, with diet still playing a supporting role. Our guide on whether diet affects hair growth covers the everyday food side. Which treatment suits you is decided by your doctor at consultation, not by a supplement label.

What to settle before you buy another supplement

Before spending more on pills to learn which vitamin deficiency causes hair loss in your case, get clear answers to three questions:

  • Has a blood test shown a real deficiency, and which one?
  • What is the target level, and when will it be rechecked?
  • If the deficiency is corrected and hair fall continues, what is the next step?

These questions turn a shopping list into a treatment plan, and they are the starting point of a nutrition review at the clinic.

Why choose Aneels Hair Transplant for hair fall linked to nutrition

  • Nutrition and hair treatment under one roof: nutritional counselling sits alongside PRP, exosome therapy, laser hair therapy and hair growth medications. If correcting a deficiency is not enough, the next treatment starts without a new referral.
  • One surgeon-led clinic with long hours: consultants are available from 11 am to 8 pm and the surgeon from 4 pm to 7 pm. Blood reports can be reviewed at a time that suits you, and support staff answer messages around the clock.
  • Outcomes you can see: the clinic’s own patients appear in the before and after results gallery.

Book a consultation with your recent blood reports so the team can confirm which deficiency, if any, explains your hair fall. Call 0341-7555512, message us on WhatsApp, or visit 32 B Masson Road, behind Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does vitamin B12 affect hair growth?

Only weakly, as far as current research shows. B12 matters for energy, blood and nerves, so a low level should be treated whatever your hair is doing. If hair fall is your main complaint and B12 is the only abnormal result, your doctor will usually look for a second cause such as low iron or thyroid disease.

Can Evion stop hair fall?

Evion is a vitamin E brand, and there is no good evidence that vitamin E capsules stop common hair fall. Small studies on related compounds exist, but they are not strong enough to guide treatment. Taking it alongside a proper diagnosis does little harm in normal amounts, but it should not replace one.

Does vitamin D deficiency cause hair loss in men too?

It can contribute in men and women alike, especially in patchy hair loss. In men with a receding hairline or thinning crown, however, the main cause is usually hereditary. Correcting low vitamin D is still worthwhile for bone and general health, but it will not reverse male pattern thinning.

Is hair fall from a vitamin deficiency permanent?

No. Shedding caused by a deficiency is usually temporary once the cause is corrected, because the follicles themselves are not destroyed. Regrowth is slow, so judge progress over months rather than weeks, and keep dated photos to compare.

Where can I get vitamin tests done in Lahore before my visit?

Any established hospital or private laboratory you trust can run these tests, so choose one near home. Bring printed copies or clear phone photos to the consultation, with the dates. If you had tests in the last few months, there is often no need to repeat them.

How much does treatment cost if my hair fall is not a deficiency?

It depends on the cause. If PRP is advised for thinning, sessions in Lahore are estimated at PKR 8,000 to PKR 20,000 each, with the exact figure confirmed at a paid consultation. Medication costs vary by drug and are explained once the type of hair loss is clear.
