FUT trichophytic closure is a way of stitching the donor wound after the strip is removed. Before closing, the surgeon trims a very thin sliver of surface skin, about one to two millimetres, from one edge of the wound. The follicles under that edge are left alive. The other edge is then drawn over it and stitched.

As the wound heals, the hidden follicles grow up through the scar line. The hair crossing the line breaks up its edge, so the eye does not pick out a straight bare stripe.
